Abstract

A suitable material for use in half-wave plates for submillimetre polarimetry must have adequate birefringence and negligible differential absorption loss between ordinary and extraordinary rays. The absolute absorption loss should be as small as possible and it should be possible to coat optically the basic plate to remove reflection losses and also the differential reflection loss. Quartz is an obvious choice. This paper discusses the measurement of the relevant optical properties, the choice of coating materials and the method of construction for the complete plates. Experimental results are presented on the performance of the complete plates and this is compared with computed predictions using a thin film analysis of the plates. It will be seen that excellent plates can be produced for wavelengths down to 250 μm.
